My Instagram feed is starting to fill up with ads for Spring outfits which means I have started pinning to Pinterest like crazy to help my families figure out what to wear for Spring family photos. The thought of green grass, warm air, and blooms on the trees after a long winter gets everyone excited for Spring family photos on Long Island!
If you’ve been following me you know I love mixing soft colors, simple patterns and textures. Spring means bright green grass so my first rule of thumb is to stay away from too much green during Cherry Blossom Minis. Let’s find colors that work with the green and pink rather than compete!

Let’s Talk About Color & Texture
Blues- denim (also great texture!), a blue/grey chino, or a blue flowy dress.
Cream/whites- perfect for a little girl’s eyelet dress (texture again!), flowy dress for mom, white or off-white wide leg jeans, or dad’s linen button down.
A note on linen- I love linen for family photos. It brings texture, a casual vibe and anyone in the family can wear it. Just remember it will wrinkle so put it on right before we start taking pictures.
Pink- Our mind often goes directly to pink when we think of Cherry Blossom season. Yes, it can be beautiful to also wear! I tend to suggest just a small amount of pink so the overall feel of your photos doesn’t scream pink.
Green- Yes, I do include greens in my style guide, but I choose a muted green that compliments my editing style and is different than the grass color. If someone in your family is going to wear green, I tend to suggest it be a parent, since kiddos will often have photos sitting on the green grass!
Lately, I have been loving a more casual feel for in-home sessions, but I can’t stay away from flowy dresses. The movement it creates helps tell a story. The long dress I’m wearing in the photo above is still a client favorite. It creates a whimsical feel, flows in the wind, and feels so feminine.

Let’s Talk About Pattern
Petite florals on a neutral background works beautifully for Spring family photos. An ivory bubble romper with eyelet or small fl0rals compliments the location beautifully. Sometimes it’s hard to find more variety for the boys so I suggest patterns with symmetrical lines for fun!
